Oral health is not only important to your appearance and sense of well-being but also your overall health, and there is evidence to back the claim. There are more bacteria in your mouth right now than there are people on Earth. If those germs settle into your gums, you' ve got gum disease. Gum disease is very common amongst a given population. About 90% of adults have gum disease during their lives. Gum disease can start at any age. Children and teenagers who have diabetes are at greater risk than those who don' t have diabetes.
When you have gum disease, germs work to destroy your gums ( gingiva) and the bone around your teeth. It starts with plaque. Plaque is a sticky film of food, saliva, and germs. Plaque loves to settle at the gum line. There, germs get busy making your gums red, tender, and likely to bleed. When plaque stays put, it hardens into tartar. Tartar builds up under the gum line. More plaque forms over the tartar. If plaque and tartar are not cleaned away, even gentle brushing can cause your gums to bleed. This is called gingivitis. It is the first stage of gum disease. If you ignore gingivitis, the gum disease gets worse.
The more severe form of gum disease is called periodontitis. When you reach this stage, your gums begin to pull away from your teeth. Pockets form between your teeth and gums. These fill with germs and pus, and deepen.
Growing evidence suggests that inflammation, which begins in the mouth as gingivitis and develops into periodontitis may be associated with systemic inflammation. Systemic inflammation may, in turn, contribute to other health problems. Cavities and gum disease may contribute to many serious conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and premature and low weight babies. Untreated cavities can also be painful and lead to serious infections.
Herbal based products are gaining popularity in oral health. Oral care products containing herbs like neem, pudina and meswak are common and have been found to be useful not only in containing dental caries but also relieve toothache and bad odor.
Neem
Neem ( Azadirachta indica) also popularly known as neem possesses antimicrobial action. It is widely used in the preparation of toothpaste as an antibacterial agent. Because of its antibacterial actions, Neem finds use in various skincare and personal care preparations. In fact, Neem twigs have been used by thousands of people for hundreds of years as an extremely effective method of total oral hygiene. In a study by Vanka et al., a mouthwash prepared from neem extract was found to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, an oral pathogen ( bacteria) responsible for dental caries and was effective in reversing mouth ulcers ( incipient carious lesions) 1.
The use of chewing sticks is most common in the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent. Chewing sticks of Neem ( Azadirachta indica) and Arak ( Salvadora persica) are commonly used as oral hygiene tools in different parts of the world, Several studies have demonstrated the anti-plaque and antibacterial effect of these sticks. A study by Almas et al., compared the effectiveness of antimicrobial activity of Neem and Arak chewing stick' s aqueous extracts at various concentrations and found that both chewing stick extracts were effective on pathogenic ( disease causing) bacteria in the mouth2.
Epidemiological study conducted by Venugopal et al. assessed and demonstrated the efficacy of Neem ( Azadirachta indica) based toothpaste in dental caries. Mean plaque and gingival scores were reduced over the six-week trial period3. In another study by Venugopal et al., incidence of dental caries was found to be much less in children using toothpaste containing neem extract4.
Pomegranate
Pomegranate ( Punica granatum) a commonly found fruit is beneficial in maintaining oral health. The rind of this commonly found fruit exhibits antibacterial and astringent activity. Its astringent action results in strengthened gums. Further, it is also credited with antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, which render it beneficial in oral health. In a study by Shastravaha, treatment with the extract of Punica granatum was found to significantly improved clinical signs of chronic periodontitis5.
Indian Gum Arabic Tree
Another herb commonly used in maintaining dental hygiene is Indian Gum Arabic tree ( Acacia arabica) also known as Babool. Fresh twig of Indian Gum Arabic tree ( Acacia Arabica) is used for the protection of gums and teeth. Fine powder made from dried shoot is applied to teeth. The aqueous extract of the fresh nuts of Indian Gum Arabic tree ( Acacia Arabica) were found to inhibit the growth of germs in the oral cavity6. It is useful as an external application for mouth ulcers. Further, extract of Indian Gum Arabic tree ( Acacia Arabica) has been found to reduce gingival ( gum) inflammation occurring as a consequence of plaque reduction.
